A cybersecurity expert is warning that a recent data breach at an Upstate New York hospital could be harmful to patients.
Earlier in 2018, Middletown Medical in Orange County confirmed that a
bad security setting on its website allowed users to see patient data
and electronic patient information. Names, birth dates, client ID
numbers and whether or not patients had received radiology services, as
well as the dates of those services, were all revealed.
The hospital has since modified the site and terminated unauthorized access, according to Spectrum News Hudson Valley, but the potential for harm may still exist.
"You can sell that information, you can use that information for
blackmail, forms of bribing the individuals based upon health histories
that aren't exposed to the general public," said Brig. Gen. (Ret.)
