The following statement was submitted by the office of New York State Senator James Sanders, Jr.
It
is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Sanders
Sr., father of Senator James Sanders Jr. Mr. Sanders lived a long and
amazing life, going from being a sharecropper in the Jim Crow south to
seeing his children rise and flourish and the campaign for the election
of former President Barack Obama. James Sanders Sr. transitioned after a
long illness. He was 95 years old and just three weeks shy of his 96th birthday.
In keeping with his great religious faith, we ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the First Church of God Building Fund (1425 Beach Channel Drive Far Rockaway, NY 11691) in his memory.

The Sanders family is grateful to
those who have reached out, and continue to reach out, to us to express
their condolences. We will try to thank each one of you personally on

The tentative funeral arrangements are as follows:
The wake will be held on November 6 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the First Church of God. The funeral mass will follow from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the same location.
Burial will take place the following day, Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 9 a.m. Calverton National Cemetery.
