Here’s a story I had earlier Monday about the state Board of Regents
deciding to let Puerto Rican teachers who may have been displaced by
Hurricane Maria to work in NY:
New York schools are bracing for an influx of students from Puerto
Rico who have been displaced by Hurricane Maria. Now, the state Board of
Regents wants to certify teachers coming from the island to help
instruct the youngest storm refugees.
The board on Monday was set to approve a temporary certification process for Puerto Rican teachers coming to New York.
Under the proposal, those certified could begin teaching during this
school year. Teachers also could begin the process of meeting state
standards for a permanent certification.
Districts across New York, including Albany, are preparing for
students from Puerto Rico as the island continues to struggle to rebuild
basic infrastructure such as electricity, water and sewer services.
