Mayor Bill
de Blasio on Friday morning appeared to threaten to revoke the franchise
of one of the city's largest cable and internet providers—a company
locked in a bitter battle with the union that represents its employees.
Charter Communications, which had absorbed Time Warner Cable and rebranded it as Spectrum
last year, failed to reach a contract deal with the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3 in March—resulting in 1,800
technicians going on strike. The union has taken issue with the
telecommunications giant's push to pay less toward pensions and health
benefits, and accused the company of refusing to bargain, accusations
Charter has denied.
De Blasio
reiterated earlier statements of support for Local 3 on his weekly "Ask
the Mayor" segment on WNYC and once more offered to help mediate a deal
at City Hall.
