De Blasio Denies City Official Was Fired for Giving Info to Feds During Fund-Raising Investigation

Mayor de Blasio claims the firing of a top city official had “nothing to do” with the aide telling federal investigators City Hall improperly intervened on behalf of a big campaign donor.

But before Deputy Commissioner Ricardo Morales was fired, the city was well aware Morales had become a hostile witness whom federal prosecutors wanted to question about whether the mayor did favors for donors.

Morales was one of only two city workers questioned in the investigation who declined a city-funded lawyer. Instead, he chose to be represented by a lawyer paid for by the federal government.
