Bronx, NY - On Sunday, in Celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, New York State Assembly Member Michael Blake released the following statement:
“Today, we celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act, a landmark piece of legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion or gender.
The act came from tireless effort, sacrifice and pain. But, even in the midst of tragedy, we pressed forward, led by the women and men of the Civil Rights Movement whose legacies we now carry. From spending time with MLK's family, to being in the presence of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height to marching with Congressman John Lewis, my spirit has been strengthened by these titans.
At a time when civil rights are under attack in states around the country, today is another reminder of the continued need for action. We must do more to protect our civil rights, from voting rights to economic justice, from jobs to education, especially those most at risk and most disenfranchised, which is why we must always reject efforts to take away our power, our voice and our vote.”
