Mayor de Blasio, for whatever reason, has publicly decided to play the
role of, literally, a limousine liberal. On the one hand, he insists on
taking chauffeured SUV on an 11-mile trek from Gracie Mansion to his
favorite YMCA in Brooklyn during the morning rush hour; at the same
time, he lectures the other 8 million of us about the need to change our
daily habits to be more sensitive to the environment.
At least one of de Blasio’s long-shot challengers, fellow Democrat Sal
Albanese, has wrapped the epithet around the mayor’s neck, no doubt
mindful that the actual phrase “limousine liberal” originated in the
1969 race for City Hall, when another tall, left-leaning incumbent mayor
— John Lindsay — faced a tough re-election battle.
Lindsay’s Democratic challenger, then-City Controller Mario Procaccino,
channeled the resentments of a working class fed up with being excluded
and insulted by what Procaccino called “the Manhattan arrangement,” a
cozy constellation of business elites, university intellectuals and
media titans with interlocking business, school and family
relationships.
