City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said Wednesday she
disagrees with New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill's
decision not to march in the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and she blamed
"ultra-right-wing" forces for trying to "discredit" the event.
O’Neill, along with several law enforcement groups and major
corporate sponsors, plans to boycott the event after the parade’s
organizing committee announced it would honor Oscar Lopez Rivera — a
formerly jailed Puerto Rican nationalist.
“I disagree with the commissioner’s statements and his decision to
not march. We can’t re-litigate a case that has already been litigated,”
Mark-Viverito told reporters during an unrelated press conference at
City Hall.
