City Charter Schools See Record 73,000 Student Applications

A record 73,000 city kids applied for seats in publicly funded, privately run charter schools in 2017, a study published Wednesday shows.

That number is up 7% from the 68,000 who applied last year, according to the NYC Charter School Center.

In addition, the number of kids wait-listed for charter school seats increased from 44,000 in 2016 to 47,000 in 2017, according to the charter center’s tally.

CEO James Merriman said the figures illustrate higher demand among city families for independently operated charter schools.

“Our charter sector simply can’t keep up with the demand from families, even with more than 20,000 available seats this year,” Merriman said.
