Sanders Statement on Free Tuition at CUNY/SUNY Schools

“For far too long, a lack of financial means has prevented bright young people from becoming the stars they were destined to be. I recognized the need for tuition-free public college, two senate sessions ago when I introduced the New York Promise Program. Due to my persistent efforts and the support of my colleagues in government, we were able to  collaborate on a plan which was approved by Governor Cuomo.  I do have some concerns about the new program, however, primarily that lower income students may have difficulty applying since it calls for all Pell Grants and help from the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to be exhausted before one can take advantage of the program. In addition, the free tuition funding does not cover textbooks, housing or meals. This is a positive step forward, but we need to ensure that all of our children have access to the educational opportunities necessary to compete in today’s economy.”
