A majority of local police agencies missed a mid-February deadline to
report their number of untested sexual assault evidence kits to the
state, according to a report Wednesday.
However, representatives
from three of the county’s largest law enforcement agencies said they
believed they followed protocol or were erroneously omitted from the
list of those who reported. Both the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office
and Town of Poughkeepsie Police said they reported by the deadline, and
City of Poughkeepsie Police said it wasn’t aware it needed to report
because it does not have any untested kits.
According to the
report from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, 12 area
agencies in total didn’t respond by the Feb. 17 deadline. Five of the
eight local agencies that responded reported they did not have any
untested kits. Three agencies reported they had untested kits, including
New Paltz Town and Village Police (eight), Hyde Park Town Police (six)
and the Ulster County Sheriff's Office (six).
