Plans to close the Indian Point nuclear power plant in four years
could invigorate efforts to build what some have called an extension
cord to transmit Canadian hydropower to New York City.
The 333-mile high-voltage line, called the Champlain Hudson Power
Express, has obtained most of the major federal and state approvals it
needs for construction to begin. Officials in Quebec say the province
has a bounty of excess hydropower and is ready to ship it over the line,
which would run along the Hudson River to Manhattan.
Quebec’s energy minister, Pierre Arcand, is scheduled to arrive in
New York City this week, hoping to strike a deal with the Cuomo
administration.
“I feel confident that we can be a solution to many problems,” Arcand
said in an interview. “Our energy is clean, it’s reliable, it’s
affordable.”
The transmission project, backed by the Blackstone Group, could
provide about half the 2,000 megawatts of power that will be lost when
Indian Point closes in 2021. Indian Point supplies power to Westchester
County, New York City and parts of New Jersey.
