A Victory For Safe, Clean Power In New York

 

The following letter was submitted by the Office of New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

It’s been a top priority of mine since taking office in 2011 to address the serious health and safety risks that the Indian Point nuclear power plant poses to millions of New Yorkers. For the past six years, my office has led the state’s challenge to efforts by Entergy, the owner of Indian Point, to extend its license to operate the plant for an additional two decades.

This week, I was proud to sign an agreement with Entergy, Governor Cuomo, and the committed environmental advocates at Riverkeeper to decommission the Indian Point power plant. This agreement is a major victory for the millions of New Yorkers who live and work in nearby communities, and will help kick-start the state’s clean energy future.

This agreement puts in place several important safety provisions that go beyond federal requirements to ensure that Indian Point operates as safely as possible as it transitions to a timely shut down. You can read more about the safety measures negotiated by my office in the New York Times.

I want to thank the countless New Yorkers who spoke up and raised concerns about the risks posed by Indian Point. In the years ahead, my office will closely monitor Entergy's compliance with this agreement to make sure its terms are met and that our state remains a national leader on the environment.
