New York City’s Child Welfare Commissioner, Gladys Carrión, Resigns

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday that his child welfare commissioner was stepping down after a succession of child deaths that renewed long-running concerns about the city’s supervision of vulnerable children.

The abrupt resignation of Gladys Carrión as commissioner of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services is the latest blow to the mayor’s health and social services team, which has endured pointed criticism and several high-level departures.

In a letter to Mr. de Blasio, Ms. Carrión said she was leaving for her “well-being” and noted “tremendous strides.” Mr. de Blasio said in a statement that she had an “unparalleled commitment to children and families.”

But in recent months, other elected officials have questioned Ms. Carrión’s effectiveness amid a string of fatalities involving children who had been on her agency’s radar.

Statement by Senator Ruben Diaz

“We all know that the innocent often pay for the negligence of others. In this case, we see Commissioner Gladys Carrion resign from her duties as the New York City Administration for Children's Services.  Commissioner Carrion publicly wept during testimony at the New York City Council hearings this past October because she cares so much for the victims of child abuse and neglect, but no one came to her defense. Instead, she was treated like a scapegoat.

I am sad to see that Commissioner Gladys Carrión is paying for the negligence of others.

We should all be crying today because there are no plans and there is no one to see that the errors at the Administration for Children’s Services will be corrected and prevent tragedies from occurring in other families.”
