Violence Rate in City Jails Spike Despite Record Spending and Drop in Detainees

The violence rate in city jails continues to spike despite record spending and a drop in the number of detainees, an analysis by the City Controller found.

The annual cost-per-inmate reached $132,019 last fiscal year, which is 17% higher than last year, and a 37% jump from 2014, according to Scott Stringer.

New York’s annual costs have long dwarfed the yearly per-inmate costs in other big cities.

The New York City rate is 102% greater than the cost in Chicago and 278% higher than Philadelphia, Stringer said.
