Following a racially-motivated threat being scrawled on a whiteboard in a classroom at Florida Gulf Coast University, The Grio
reports that campus police have said that there will be no criminal
investigation. The drawing, which depicted a man hanging from a tree
with the words, “Kill N******” was clearly disturbing,” but police chief
Steven Moore explains that despite this, technically no crime was
committed, so there is little they are able to do legally.
“This was on a white board with the
proper type of pens so easily erased, therefore, no vandalism,” he
explained. “As there is no crime, there is no hate crime.” At the
moment, there are no clear suspects for who left the drawing.
Seidler Hall, which houses the
College of Arts and Sciences, is open to the public. Its doors are
unlocked, so anyone can come and go as they please during day or night.
At the moment, it is believed that someone entered the classroom on the
night of October 12th to leave the message. Despite the fact that there
is no investigation, many students at the university have shared their
outrage and concern.
“They’re talking about killing a
certain race, so it’s not something that should be taken lightly in my
opinion,” said Brielle Conner.
