In a city blessed with many heroes, a very few stand out as the best of
the best; they are the ones we dub Princes of the City, a title mostly
conferred after long decades of civic service. Kenneth Thompson, a true
prince of the city, did more in a few short years than most of us will
accomplish in a career, or a lifetime.
The most important among many professional accomplishments were his
efforts to reverse or vacate the wrongful convictions of his
predecessor, freeing 14 people from the soul-crushing horror of
captivity in his first year as district attorney, with another seven to
follow.
It marked a break with the normal practice of prosecutors, who
typically ask to be judged by the speed and frequency with which they
convict and imprison criminals. Thompson insisted on a different and
higher standard — actual justice — right up until the moment this good
man, who saved so many lives, tragically lost his own Sunday in a battle
against cancer.
