The word boycott has a deep meaning
for the African-American community, particularly when it comes to being
used as an instrument of change. The usage of boycotts in the Civil
Rights movement, such as the Montgomery bus boycott, forced various
institutions to walk back on racist rules and practices by flexing the
economic power of the African-American community. Now, in another time
of racial tension, actor Isaiah Washington is calling for another
24-hour boycott to make a statement, reports Centric.
Currently starring on “The 100,”
Isaiah took to Facebook to explain his plans for boycotting following
the death of Terrance Crutcher. An unarmed Black man shot by police on
Sept. 16th, Crutcher is one of many Black people killed by police this
year alone in occasionally dubious circumstances. This has led to
widespread condemnation of police as well as protests across the U.S.,
some of which have become violent.
