New York's suicide rate has risen dramatically over the past several
years, with more people now dying by their own hand than from both
murder and motor vehicle accidents, officials said Wednesday.
Some 565 people died by suicide in 2014, compared to 353 homicides and
270 deaths in motor vehicle accidents the same year, the most recent
from which stats are available.
The suicide rate, meanwhile, has gone up from 5.5 per 100,000 people in 2000 to 6.3 people per 100,000 in 2014.
Officials say the figures show a need for better mental health services.
