New York, NY - Minister
Kirsten John Foy, the Northeast Regional Director of National Action Network
released the following statement today pertaining to calls for the City of New
York to release disciplinary records of Daniel Pantaleo, the police officer who
fatally choked Eric Garner. Minister Foy is currently in Washington, DC with
Rev. Al Sharpton and congressional leaders at the White House for a special
briefing on civil rights and criminal justice matters.
“As a policy, National Action Network
(NAN) is in full support of transparency regarding the actions of NYPD officer
Daniel Pantaleo as long as it does not interfere with the ongoing federal
investigation into the Eric Garner case. We recognize that the U.S. Justice
Department is still investigating the case and based upon information and media
reports, there is an active Grand Jury and witnesses have been brought in.
There are potential criminal civil rights charges being examined and knowing
this, we are in support of disclosure if it does not interfere with a federal
investigation. Today, activists are calling for the release of Officer Pantaleo’s
CCRB history and we support this if it does not inhibit his federal rights and
the ongoing investigation of criminal civil rights charges by the U.S. Justice
Department.”
