School Where Philando Castile Worked Creates A Scholarship In His Honor

By Liku Zelleke

Reports suggest that efforts are being made to keep the memory of Philando Castile alive by having a scholarship established in his name at the St. Paul Central High School, where he graduated from and went back to work at.

Castile was fatally shot in his car by a St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer during a routine traffic stop and died in front of his fiancée and toddler daughter who were in the vehicle. The world watched as his fiancée streamed the incident live on social media.

The St. Paul Central High School Foundation plans to hold a fundraiser for the new scholarship at the end of the month. Already, alumni from the classes of 2001 (the same year Castile graduated from the high school in), 2002, 2003, and 2005 have hosted their first fundraiser last Sunday at the Dining Recreation Center and managed to raise over $25,000 on top of the $10,000 that had already been raised by the organizing committee.
