Albany –
Today, the state Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to require
electric companies to meet Governor Cuomo’s Clean Energy Standard.
The following statement was issued today by Peter Iwanowicz, executive director at Environmental Advocates of New York:
“New
York State has set visionary climate and clean energy goals – what was
missing until today was the requirement to turn those goals for the
electricity sector into action. The Clean Energy
Standard moves us down the path towards clean, renewable energy by
taking the promise of getting half of our electricity from clean,
renewable sources by 2030, and requiring power companies to get there.
"Importantly,
the Standard establishes aggressive benchmarks that energy utilities
must meet on renewables. It’s not a suggestion; it is a requirement.
"This is big and can transform the economy in New York State.
"On a
program of this size and complexity, the devil is always in the details.
Clearly defining mandates for offshore wind and enhanced energy
efficiency must be immediate priorities. Additionally,
New York still needs a statewide and economy-wide climate action plan
that extends beyond the power sector in order to achieve Governor
Cuomo’s full climate and clean energy commitments.

their work and leadership on moving New York down the path to a clean
energy future. Environmental Advocates looks
