Cuomo Officials Cite Federal Probe to Withhold Public Records

 

ALBANY — The Cuomo administration is refusing to publicly release documents related to economic development programs and actions of former aides that are the subject of a federal criminal probe, a blanket approach questioned by the state’s own open government expert.

The new policy has come to light as a series of media outlets — including POLITICO New York — requested records from various state agencies under the Freedom of Information Law and wrote about their denials.

Federal prosecutors working for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara subpoenaed Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive chamber on April 29, looking into undisclosed conflicts of interest and improper lobbying related to its Buffalo Billion economic development program and other high-tech facilities constructed by SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
