Albany –
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced today that his
office, in the midst of an investigation into Exxon Mobil’s possible
fraud, will not comply with an unlawful attempt
by the House of Representatives to interfere with his ongoing probe.
Peter Iwanowicz, Executive Director of
Environmental Advocates of New York, issued the following statement regarding this development.
“We
know there are politicians who deny climate science. And we know there
are politicians buried so deep into the pockets of fossil fuel donors
they will stop at nothing to pollute our air
and denigrate our environment. But the flagrant and reprehensible
misuse and abuse of the House Committee on Science, Space and
Technology, in order to thwart a standard investigation of Exxon Mobil’s
alleged fraud, is new territory for even the most experienced
and cynical watchers of Congress.
"The
authority of individually elected state Attorneys General to conduct
investigations of this kind without interference is well-established.
The House’s lack of authority is evident; while
their goal is to keep investors and the public in the dark about
Exxon’s anti-climate activities, their strategy has turned over as often
as dirty bath water. And that’s because it’s just as filthy.
"This is
truly an affront to all New Yorkers, and all Americans. It’s not mere
overreach, it’s rotten to the core. Anyone looking for the latest
example of why so many have lost faith in their
government, look no further than the House Committee on Science, Space
and Technology, a once-venerable body that has become a go-to entity
when powerful corporations need to run to Congress to keep people from
learning the truth.”
