Saratoga Springs, NY - The Student Assembly for the State University of New York
came together in Saratoga Springs for their annual spring conference this past
weekend. Among the business they conducted was electing the organization’s
leadership for 2016-2017. Marc Cohen, a student at the University at Albany
pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration, was elected President of the
Student Assembly.
Among his responsibilities, Cohen will serve as a Trustee on
the SUNY Board. “I’m excited to work toward continued progress,” said Cohen
after the vote. “The elected representatives of SUNY’s campuses have given
me a great honor, and I realize that it comes with great responsibility. I look
forward to bringing my experience to bear as we improve collaboration and
expand our advocacy in the coming year.” Cohen currently serves the Assembly as
Chief of Staff to the President, and has previously worked as Senior Director
of External Affairs and as a Representative.
“Marc has been critical to our successes across the board
this year, and I have complete confidence that he will continue to move this
organization forward,” said Thomas Mastro, current Student Assembly President and SUNY
Trustee. “He will have a great executive team around him, all of whom share a
common goal of seeing progress and success.”
Bridget Doyle was elected to be the SUNYSA Vice President.
Doyle is a junior at SUNY Fredonia double majoring in history and political
science, with a minor in gender studies. She has been the SUNYSA Campus Safety
Committee Chair for the last semester. “Being elected to the position of Vice
President is an incredible honor. I am looking forward to advocating for the
needs of SUNY students throughout our state, and working together to bring
about a better future for higher education,” said Doyle.
Pat Gareau was elected to be the SUNYSA Treasurer. He is a
junior at the University of Albany and is currently the Director of Academic
Affairs and Community Colleges Committee Chair. “My experience this year in the
Student Assembly has made me a believer in the positive impact we can have, and
I can’t wait to get started in this new leadership opportunity.” said Gareau.
Morgan Wood, a Freshman in the Binghamton Advantage Program
who is also active at SUNY Broome, was elected as Secretary. She has been
serving on the Executive Board of SUNYSA as Secretary since the fall 2015
semester. “I am honored to have been re-elected to serve our nearly half a
million students as the Secretary for the Student Assembly. We accomplished a
great deal in the last year, and I can't wait to see what 2016-2017 will bring
with another fantastic leadership team that will continue to speak out for SUNY
students,” said Wood.
In addition to the Executive Board members, each sector
elected Representatives to the Executive Committee.
Over 300 students attended the SUNYSA Spring conference from
44 SUNY campuses. In addition to the Executive Board elections, Voting
Delegates discussed resolutions about issues that are important to SUNY
students. Non-voting delegates attended leadership development workshops
throughout the weekend.
The candidates elected for Executive Board and
Representative positions will take office on June 1.
