First Lady Nancy Reagan (1921-2016)

 
Judy Woodruff and Carl Cannon talked about the life and influence of first lady Nancy Reagan and responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. They discussed her role as a political partner with her husband, his protector, and his primary caregiver during his years suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Topics included her relations with the press and her role as a fashion icon. In pursuing her “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign, she became the first sitting first lady to address the United Nations and to address the nation in a joint appearance with the president. Video was shown of Kirby Hanson showing artifacts at the Reagan Presidential Library.

Video clips included Mrs. Reagan and her son Ron in a 2011 PBS documentary, Mrs. Reagan in a 1999 C-SPAN interview and a 1988 interview with Hedrick Smith, President and Mrs. Reagan’s 1986 television message, and the president speaking in 1988.

This was the 31st episode in the C-SPAN series “First Ladies: Influence and Image.”
