Around 2,000 Brazilian police officers and soldiers met no major resistance on Sunday during the planned occupation of a complex of shanty-towns close to thoroughfares which will be used during the 2016 Olympic Games. The shanty-towns had been long held by Rio de Janeiro's largest drug-dealing faction, barricades had been put up to keep police and soldiers out. However, these offered little resistance to police and soldiers who entered the area in armored vehicles at dawn and completed their operation by mid morning. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo was in the Manguinhos favela as the raids were carried out.
