Mitt Romney, the Republican US presidential candidate, is expected to announce Representative Paul Ryan as his running mate, US media has reported. Ryan built his reputation with aggressive plans for cutting the deficit by dramatically chopping federal spending. He is also a socially conservative Catholic who is pro-life and opposes same sex marriage, but is less confrontational than others with the same views.
