It may have looked like Ecuador was taking on an enormous headache when it gave Julian Assange refuge in its London embassy and subsequently granted him political amnesty, but neighbouring countries have come out strong in support. At a meeting of South American foreign ministers in Ecuador on Sunday, the officials slammed Britain for suggesting it could seize Assange from inside the embassy. More than freedom of speech and the press - which many of the regional nations have not exactly championed - the foreign ministers want to protect their rights under international law.
