Governor Andrew Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Friday, August 12 in honor of a Fort Drum soldier who died in Afghanistan on August 5.
Army Specialist Mark J. Downer died of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade in Kandahar province.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team stationed at Fort Drum. He was from Warner Robins, Georgia.
"On behalf of all New Yorkers, we honor the memory of Specialist Mark Downer," Governor Cuomo said.
