Donald Trump: Loser

If you are going to read just one (or one more) book about Donald Trump and his character, what drives him, what explains his behavior in all the realms of his life (at least in the ones of which we are aware), I strongly recommend Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump (Hachette Books, 2019) by the golf writer, Rick Reilly, associated for a long time with Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

Golf has been an integral part of Trump's life since he was a youngster, both as a player and later as a golf-course owner. In both realms of golf, Trump is a master cheat, bully, liar, and tall story teller. Reilly has many illustrations of Trump's behavior, on the course, in the club houses, and in the owner's offices/suites. The book is filled with humor, which makes it an easy read. But of course, the subject is deadly serious and Reilly is serious about his work as a journalist.

By the way, this Is not a gossip book. It is a work of journalism, filled with personal observations, confirmation of the stories told by others from well-known professional golfers, to members of Trump golf clubs, to a variety of amateurs and entertainment types who have played with him, to caddies, both Trump's and other's, and double-checking. It is most revealing about Trump the person, as well as Trump the golfer and Trump the golf-businessman. And, the humor to the contrary not-withstanding, it is a scary book, which I think Mr. Reilly intended it to be.

Mr. Reilly begins the book with a quote from the English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse : "To find a man's true character, play golf with him." While many a famous person in golf played with him, learned his true character, and still associated their name with his for one reason or another, one of the most famous names in golf, who associated his own name with a variety of golfing and non-golfing products, was once asked by Trump to join in a business venture with him. The man said, "OK. Let's play a round." After it, he just walked away and never spoke with Trump again.

'Future Hope' Column: People in Cages on the Border on July 4th

By Ted Glick

Thanks to a lot of people who are working, day after day, to address the humanitarian crisis on the US southern border caused by Mafioso Don and those shamefully doing his bidding, the truth about the abysmal, subhuman conditions both children and adult migrants are experiencing has exploded, again, into public view over the last week. The pictures that have come out in just the last couple of days of the severe overcrowding in rooms and cages are infuriating, even more so when Racist One tweets: “If Illegal Immigrants are unhappy with the conditions in the quickly built or refitted detentions centers, just tell them not to come. All problems solved!”

His game plan is clear: send a message to desperate, brown-skinned, Spanish-speaking people that your living conditions will be even worse if you dare to come north seeking a better life.
It’s not like all of this is completely new, but the lengths to which Trump is willing to take his vile racism is new.

How can those of us who support immigrant rights but whose personal priorities are on other things, other issues, or just on making a living and raising a family—how can we do more? How can we help to raise such a massive cry that the anti-immigrant racists are forced to change their policies?

One answer is what the group Never Again: Jews Against Ice did several days ago at the immigrant detention center in Elizabeth, NJ. 36 people were arrested as they blocked the entrance to the facility.

The Atlanta Child Murders: 'The Ku Klux Klan Was Involved'

Daryl Davis, Star of 'Accidental Courtesy', Shares Information
Provided by "Extremely Credible" Police Sources and "Madame X"

An Exclusive

By Gary Glennell Toms

In this edition of "The G-Man Interviews", my special guest will share information he obtained about the Atlanta Child Murders over the last 20 years. This is the first time he has spoken publicly about what sources told him, and the revelations will be troubling for many in this country and abroad.

Daryl Davis has obtained unprecedented access to members of the Ku Klux Klan and white supremacist movement for more than two decades. He continues to meet with high-ranking leaders and members from all over the U.S., making him one of the most unique race relations experts and activists in the country.

Davis is an actor, author and lecturer who obtained his Bachelor of Music Degree from Howard University. He's also an accomplished Blues, Rock'n'Roll, Country, and Jazz musician who performs and tours regularly with his own group, the Daryl Davis Band. Davis has worked extensively with the Legendary Blues Band and Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley's Jordanaires, Percy Sledge, and Sam Moore, among others.

As an actor, he has appeared in the critically acclaimed television show "The Wire" and a number of stage plays and movie roles.

He has received acclaim for his book, Klan-Destined Relationships,  and his work in race relations from CNN, CNBC, Good Morning America, National Public Radio, The Washington Post and other respected media outlets.

In 2016, his ongoing effort to persuade Ku Klux Klan members to leave the organization was chronicled in the award-winning documentary "Accidental Courtesy", which received international acclaim.

The interview was conducted on June 29, 2019.

Correction: During the interview, it was stated that 28 of the murders remain unsolved. However, the actual number is 26. As noted in the report, Wayne Williams was convicted in two of the cases.

After the Debates: Go Bernie and Elizabeth!

'Future Hope' Column

By Ted Glick

I tuned into PBS news last evening, hoping for the best. I wanted to see how they analyzed the results of the two Democratic Party Presidential debates in Miami. Friday is when they do their week in review political analysis with centrist Republican David Brooks and centrist Democrat Mark Shields.

Personally, I was feeling mixed but generally pretty good about the debates. The major problem I and many other climate activists had with them was the relative short shrift given to the climate crisis by the debate moderators. The issue was there, but both nights it was toward the end, and it did not receive anywhere near the amount of time or seriousness devoted to it as compared to other issues, despite very clear signs, gulp, that we may well be entering climate tipping point territory [the latest: 114 degrees yesterday in France].

On the other hand my favored candidate, Bernie Sanders, had done well, as did my second choice, Elizabeth Warren. Overall, much of what was said by most of the candidates was progressive in orientation, which is a reflection of what is happening in the country. And Joe Biden did poorly, which was no surprise but which I was glad to see. The last thing we need is another Hillary Clinton-type DP centrist to go up against Trump.

Brooks and Shields, as has been true of other centrist political analysts, were noticeably upset by the results. Given that they are both likely Biden supporters, this is understandable. I’ve been thinking ever since he came into the Presidential race that he was likely going to self-destruct at some point, and that point may have come much more quickly than I thought it would.

As people have been commenting, the Joe Biden we saw Thursday night would be eaten up by Trump. But never fear, centrists and corporate Democrats, there are alternatives.

Hong Kong Protesters Storm Government Headquarters

Hong Kong protesters stormed the Legislative Council on the anniversary of the city’s 1997 return to Chinese rule on Monday amid widespread anger over laws that would allow extraditions to China, plunging the city deeper into chaos.

A small group, mostly students wearing hard hats and masks, used a metal trolley, poles and pieces of scaffolding to hack through reinforced glass and charge at the government compound.

Governor Cuomo Signs Legislation Banning the Gay and Trans Panic Legal Defense on WorldPride Day

On June 30, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law legislation banning the gay and trans panic legal defense (S3293/A2707), fulfilling his pledge to ensure nobody uses this abhorrent legal defense strategy in the State of New York.

The Governor signed the measure, a key component of his 2019 Justice Agenda, on WorldPride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

The Governor also vowed to double down next legislative session on his campaign to legalize gestational surrogacy, which the Assembly failed to take up this year.
