Anti-Police Riots Spill Over from Paris Suburbs into City Centre

By Natalie Huet

The riots rocking the suburbs of Paris since early February spilled over onto the streets of the French capital on Wednesday evening.

In the northern neighborhood of Barbes – a short walk from the Eurostar hub of Gare du Nord – hundreds gathered to protest against police brutality and demand justice for a 22-year-old black man who says he was raped with an officer’s baton.

Youths set trash cans on fire and hurled bottles at police, who used tear gas to disperse them.
