Veep Talk: Salvador Sanchez Ceren and Enrique Peña Nieto


 
The Vice President spoke with President Salvador Sanchez Ceren of El Salvador by telephone today to discuss how to deepen bilateral and regional cooperation on reducing irregular migration from Central America to the United States, including by addressing the underlying factors that drive migration by unaccompanied children.  The Vice President commended El Salvador's leadership in advancing the Plan for the Alliance of Prosperity for the Northern Triangle of Central America, including deepening investments in security, prosperity, and establishing the rule of law.  The two leaders agreed to continue to work together in the coming months with the Inter-American Development Bank and other regional partners  to advance fiscal policy reform, stimulate economic growth, improve public management and increase security in order to build a better future for the people of Central America.

In addition, Vice President Biden spoke with President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico today to underscore the importance of the bilateral relationship to the prosperity and security of both countries.  The two leaders discussed the positive bilateral cooperation at Mexico's southern border and the importance of treating migrants from Central America with dignity and respect.  The Vice President praised Mexico for its support for the advancement  of the Northern Triangle of Central America.  In addition, the two leaders discussed new opportunities to promote exchanges between their immigration and border protection agencies.  The Vice President and President Peña Nieto reaffirmed their efforts to build a hemisphere that is prosperous, democratic, and secure.
